Musical Theatre
If you love watching musicals, singing along to Hamilton, Six or Les Miserables then this is probably the style for you. Musical Theatre singing is about acting through song, telling a story. It brings together acting and singing giving you the opportunity to perform as different characters with a range of emotions. We usually sing what someone else has written but with the emphasis on telling the characters story so some movement in rhythm is allowed. Within Musical Theatre there are further different classifications like; Legit, Contemporary & Pop/Rock lots of variety even within one style. For Musical Theatre you would usually be expected to be able to act, dance/move and sing, or certainly train in all three areas, playing a musical instrument is equally becoming an added bonus.
Legit – This word is short for legitimate and refers to the sound produced for the musicals of composers like Rodgers & Hammerstein, Rodgers & Hart and Gershwin. It is a light almost classical sound, think Julie Andrews.
Contemporary – Today’s musicals where the singing appears like an extension of speech. It is generally a bright, forward sound and can involve belting, think Wicked & Waitress.
Pop / Rock – With musicals like Rent, Six and Jesus Christ Superstar a Pop/Rock sound is required and with many juke – box musicals, those that revolve around songs by a particular group or artist like We Will Rock You or Mamma Mia. It differs to pure Pop / Rock as with Musical Theatre we still have that all important story to convey to the audience.

Your education here will centre on performance and you will have numerous opportunities to perform on stage both within RCS and at external venues around Scotland. During your final year, you will participate in fully- produced musicals, including an actor-musician show, as well as perform in a final showcase. Our aim is that you will graduate from this programme as a confident, versatile artist ready to work in the profession.

RCS is the only conservatoire in Europe to offer programmes in dance, drama, music, production and film. We encourage collaboration between all art forms, therefore as a musical theatre student here, you could regularly work with your peers to create new and engaging work.
Opportunities for collaboration include Options modules and the annual Bridge Week festival, where students can come together from across the conservatoire to bid for project money to create new pieces of performance.
