Here are some general guidelines on applying. Specific details can be found under singing styles

The style of singing you want to study will depend on the style of music you love to listen to, watch and most importantly enjoy singing.  In the UK you can study singing on courses split into four main styles:  Musical Theatre, Classical, Pop & Jazz, however within these areas there are further different styles such as Rock, R’n’B, Opera, Folk and Indie, and styles do cross over. Each style requires a slightly different vocal technique to create the required sound and that is what you will be learning about and training your voice to do. This doesn’t mean that once you train in one style you can’t sing in the others, it just means understanding what to do with your voice to sing different styles. We have outlined the four main areas of study and a description of the style to help you make a choice if you are not quite sure which singing style is right for you.

Application Routes

You will be applying for either a course at a Conservatoire or University but within this there are different application routes. We have highlighted the application process for each individual course. There are three application routes UCAS, UCAS Conservatoire or direct to the institution.

Applications for courses open in September each year. Deadlines for application depends on the course you are applying for –

  • Classical & Jazz – Early October
  • Musical Theatre & Pop – January

Entry Requirements

It is important to note that whilst the academic entry requirements are important, conservatoires put the main emphasis on how you perform in your audition. This means that if you don’t get the academic grades that you were hoping for, you shouldn’t necessarily think that this means you won’t be offered a place. They are looking for performing ability above everything else.

In terms of academic requirements its important to check individual institutions for their specific requirements.

Auditions

The date for your individual audition will be sent to you after you have applied. This will be sent to you either by UCAS, UCAS Conservatoire or directly from the institution. Generally though audition periods will be –

  • Classical & Jazz – mid October to mid December
  • Musical Theatre & Pop – November to January, with recalls in February & March

We have outlined the audition requirements for each institution but it is worth confirming these details once you have applied and quite often specified details will be sent to you once you have applied.

Audition / Applicaton Fee Waiver – generally all institutions offer the option to waiver the application / audition fee if you are eligible. Each institution will explain the process on their web site.
